My Sex And The City Review

Caught SATC on Wednesday with Prof. Mark, Dorothy, Amelia, Michelle and Mark. We were part of a business study mission in New York last December, so it seemed fitting to catch a movie set in New York.

It was a pretty long show at 2.5hours, but I have to say I didn’t feel it was draggy at all. The scenes were pretty well put together and generally entertaining. I particularly loved the scene where Carrie was throwing out clothes for her new place, and Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte all said “take” instead of “toss” when she showed that thing that looks like a leotard from the TV series opening sequence. What can I say, I’m a sucker for throwbacks to continuity.

As always, what I did like was that while it’s a show with women in mind as the target audience, it does a good job of portraying men as different emotional creatures, as opposed to outright jerkass bastards. True, Big’s actions in the movie aren’t… excusable. But they’re understandable.

The one thing I didn’t like about the show was the ending. The build up was negligible and frankly, wasn’t what I was expecting. I have nothing against happy endings, just that the way this one happened was just too… convenient.

One other, but trivial disappointment, was the lack of identifiable New York locations. Compared to the other show set in New York recently (Enchanted), SATC was hardly prolific with the New York venues.

On a whim I re-watched episode 1 of the TV series and I have to say, particularly Big and Carrie actually look better present day than when they were younger. Or is it just me? I still like Miranda the most. The independent streak, the take no bullshit attitude, but yet emotional. The short hair helps too.

So.. have you watched SATC yet? Liked it? Thought it was too long? Comment!
