Liking Being Alone, Even When You’re With Someone

Again, pure genius from How I Met Your Mother:

Mark: “Robin, I don’t get the sense you like being with me.”

Robin: “I like being with you!”

Mark: “Not as much as you like being alone. You like eating your own food, sleeping in your own bed, doing your own crosswords.”

Robin: “Well who uses ink!”

*silence*

Robin: “Sorry. Okay I’m a bit set in my ways. That doesn’t mean this won’t work.”

Mark: “Actually, it kinda does.”

This happens to me all the time, which makes me a very difficult person to be with. Not necessarily while in a relationship. It first occurred to me when I was traveling with Rubin in Bangkok back in 2006 (I think). Even though we’re pretty close friends, certain habits annoyed each other.

I think if anything, it magnifies even more when you’re in a relationship. There are a lot of things I’m used to doing alone, like watching tv, or certain things for which I have preference for, like staying in on Sundays rather than going out, which aren’t necessarily a good thing. But at the same time, being in a relationship doesn’t mean you stop being an individual, does it?

If you’ve been “set in your ways” for the better pat of 20 years, should it be realistic to expect anything to change? More on that tomorrow. For now, have you experienced this before?
