I Give In; I’ll Watch The New 90210

So on principle I decided I wasn’t going to be remotely interested or watch the new 90210 no matter what i read or heard about it because I’ve indulged enough in guilty pleasures over the years (The O.C and Gossip Girl anyone?).

But yesterday in the much-awesome Media & Pop Culture class, the opening clip of 90210 was shown to illustrate three points:

  1. Multiple narrative threads - in the three or four minutes of the opening clip, there were no less than four plotlines being interwoven with each other
  2. Few narrative signposts - no “previously”, no “so and so used to date”. You get thrown in and make do.
  3. Complex social networks - again, within the four plotlines there were different layers of who lives with who, who’s interested in who, who’s broken up with who etc.

So now, I am going to start watching the new 90210. For… research. Yeah that’s right, research.

Damn you Film 240!!!!
