Music Mondays II: Metro Station

Metro StationUnless you’ve not switched on the radio or tuned into MTV this entire summer, you’d probably be very familiar with the highly infectious hit “Shake It” by Metro Station. I was, and actually picked up the cd in Kingston (for all of $11) and was hooked on the album literally within the first two listens.

What do you need to know about Metro Station? Well, they were discovered by an intern at Columbia/Sony BMG records on MySpace (go social media!) and their frontman is Miley Cyrus’s brother. Oh, and they create very catchy “electronica” tunes. That’s all you really need to know.

The interesting thing about this band is that they launched two singles from their album, “Kelsey” and “Control”, which didn’t do very well. Only their third single “Shake It” really got them noticed. Having listened to the album countless times, I’m going to attribute this to selecting the wrong tracks. “Kelsey” and “Control” are decent tracks, but don’t have the groove that many of the other tracks on the album do. My favourite is “Tell Me What To Do”, followed very closely by “Now That We’re Done”, “Disco” and “True To Me”. I’d recommend these tracks to listeners who listened to “Shake It” and want to hear similar tracks from Metro Station.

Awesome fan-created content

While I’d love to catch them while in North America, unfortunately the band has completed their Canadian section of their tour, and the nearest they’ll be is probably New York on the 29th of October, and I can’t justify spending a couple of hundred dollars in transport and accommodation to catch them, which is a darn shame.

In any case, check out their album and music. Maybe they don’t have the most profound music, but the upbeat electronica sound of the cd is definitely a fun one, and we could do with some fun music in our lives.
