Music Mondays 57: Take That – Babe
In a shocking revelation, I realise that in over a year of talking about Music Mondays, I’ve never dedicated one to Take That – the group I consider to be the best boyband of all time. I think when I started Music Mondays I told myself I’d do something for Take That if I could hit a year (which I did 5 weeks ago) so I guess it’s about time.
For those who grew up a little later than I did, Take That was easily the biggest boy band of the 90’s, at least until 1996 when they disbanded (oh I will not forget finding that out on Valentine’s day when I was 12) and yes, they were bigger than the Backstreet Boys back in the day.
Almost impossibly, the band (less Robbie Williams) reunited in 2006, but personally I feel their new work hasn’t captured the magic of their stuff in the 90’s.
So it’s really hard to choose which songs to feature from the band because I love them all. So even though I do like some of their early work from the late ’80s, I’m going to pick 5 songs over the next 5 Music Monday installments from the “superstardom” years of 1993-1995 (as categorised by Wikipedia) which covers mainly two albums: Everything Changes and Nobody Else.
For today: Babe
I love this song for a variety of reasons. For one, it’s performed by Mark Owen and it was rare to have anyone other than Gary Barlow front a Take That song back then. I also really like the way the lyrics actually tell a story and the music is also actually quite haunting as it builds up to the revelation at the end.
Love Take That!
They’re awesome! Best boy band evah!
