Lost Season Six Episode One Thoughts (Big Big Spoilers!)

Okay so I watched the season premier and within 4 minutes it was obvious I was going to have many MANY reactions to the show, so I figured I’d write them down. Skip this post entirely if you’re not a Lostie.

If you are though… here we go:

The plane is fine?
Desmond on the plane?!
The island sunk?
Dharma shark!!
Familiar eye scene – this time it’s Kate
And wait, she’s in a tree?
Here’s Miles.. where’s everyone
Credits show Dominic Monaghan – Hello Charlie!
Wait here’s Jack, wasn’t he just on the plane?
Boone!! (Ian Somerhalder’s name appears in the credits)
Back on the plane?
Arzst!!
I wonder if Hurley and Sawyer really sat in those two seats for the original Oceanic 815
Wait not Hurley’s lucky instead of unlucky?
Juliet’s alive?!?!
Jacob! Go Team Jacob!!
Wow they’re really wearing the same clothes for the Oceanic 815 shots
Damn you old Jin!
Hmm wonder if Locke can walk
You can’t kill Jacob!!
And hheeeerrree’’s Charlie!!
Why is Jack’s pen gone?
I never thought I’d be happy to see Juliet!
Best. TV. Couple. Ever.
SMOKEY!!!!!!
WHAT?!?!?!?!
How is Juliet even still alive?
: ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
This makes the Season 5 finale even sadder.
Greg Grunberg! (okay his voice) – you should’ve stayed on Lost instead of Heroes!
Nooooo!! Charlie is supposed to be redeemed!!!!
Nope. Locke’s still in a wheelchair
Christian’s coffin is missing?
New Others!
Why an ankh?
Again with the Lists?!!?
Sayid!!
Claire!!
After 4 seasons we see Zack and Emma again
Holeeeeshieeeettt what’s going on?!?!
Let’s not resort to name-calling!
DON’T YOU MOCK LOCKE!!!!
Terry O’Quinn is badass.
Miles knows something.. I’m thinking Sayid isn’t dead
Wow in the “other world” could Jack and Locke have been friends?
Maybe Jack even fixes Locke?
OMGWTFBBQ?!?!?!?!?! (Is it too easy to predict Jacob’s back in Sayid’s body?)

And that’s that. This show has really done everything. Time travel and now possibly alternate universes. So awesome. I definitely missed some thoughts on the new Others and on the Richard/Fake Locke interaction but those I wrote were those that really caught my attention.

John Locke Lost

John Locke Lost

I’m not so much concerned about where things are going right now and how two Jacks and two Lockes and two Kates can exist. I think Damon and Carlton know the story they want to tell and what will make the fans happy. At this point the big question I wanna know is what happens to Locke. I know some people hated the early character focus in seasons 1-3 but to understand where Locke IS you have to understand where Locke HAS BEEN. And this is true for any of the characters whether it’s Jack’s transformation, Sun and Jin’s relationship or Sawyer’s redemption.

On one level I want to believe that Damon and Carlton will give us Locke back and not let his entire life be a tragedy after all the signs of him being “special”, but some part of me wonders what if this is truly going to be the biggest tragedy of Lost – that Locke has indeed that sad and pathetic life who died confused and never amounted to anything?

Next Wednesday cannot come soon enough.

  1. [Spoilers ahead! If you haven't watched LOST please don't read my comments]

My first reaction upon the first 10min of the episode is, “this is why I am happily addicted” :D

A couple of points to note. And don’t forget, within the first episode, already a few questions are answered! Darlton have remained true to their word to answer as many questions as they possibly can, while keeping with their reputational mysterious style of story-telling!

    1. Jacob and his nemesis can’t be ‘killed’. (Was it only me who couldn’t see traces of Jacob in the fire?? Where is his body?) They are in many sense, immortals. Now, only 2 people will be able to see Jacob – Miles and Hurley, and they will be crucial in their connection to Jacob’s bodyguards (speaking of which, I’m bloody sad that the cool bodyguard Big Guy died).

    2. We can finally CONFIRM that the nemesis is indeed the black smoke – Flocke ‘Fake Locke’ says, “Sorry you had to see me like that” to Ben. Two questions down, millions more to go!

    3. Ben was and will always be serving The Monster. He never served Jacob, that is probably why Jacob asked him, “What about you?” in S05 finale. All along, Ben has been serving The Monster / jacob’s nemesis, in everything he did. He wrongfully assumed that he was serving the ISLAND, but in truth, he has always been carrying out orders sent from Nemesis.

    4. #3 makes me wonder where does Charles Widmore comes in. As a leader of the island, has he ever met Jacob? Was he worthy of meeting Jacob? If so, then he must have had some connection at least with Ilana. This is worth exploring, can’t wait! What if it turns out that Charles is indeed one of the good guys??

    5. My suggestion to your question! –>
Locke’s destiny is to die. This is what I think is answered in the first episode when his body is still as dead as a doornail. Just like Charlie / Frogurt / Charlotte / Boone / many others, Locke’s destiny seems to be pre-maturely in a coffin!! Very very sad realization, but I think this holds true. The only way he will return now is probably through Nemesis manifestation, or in Losties’ dreams. One interesting point to note is, WHY LOCKE? Why did Nemesis take on Locke’s persona? What is it about Locke that the Nemesis wanted? ‘favourite’ personas (hint: Christian), but why not take on Christian’s form throughout the show? Why was it crucial for Locke to ‘die’ so that Nemesis can take his persona… to kill Jacob? I want answers! ;)

    6. ‘Alternate’ realities is still something I find it hard to accept, simply because Darlton chose not to confirm those suspicions. Also, they hinted very strongly before that time is in a straight line, and no two characters can exist at one time. The entire show depends heavily on the ‘time is in a straight line’ theory, which supports the idea of the Losties jumping forward and backwards in time. This leads to…

6a. …the important question now: “WHEN” are the Losties NOW? Probably they were flung from 1977 forward to 2007, since Hurley met with Jacob who died ‘one hour ago’. If so, then they are now IN THE FUTURE. Flashback to the plane in 2004 –> Losties land in LA – SAFE AND SOUND. Now, how can they land safe and sound in 2004, and then end up on the island in 2007? Alternate reality aside, if we were to stick with ‘time is in a straight line’, then the most probable explanation is that they would somehow end up on the island AGAIN. (it never ends! They’re destiny is on the island!)

    7. My most important question now! WHAT IS IN THE TEMPLE!? Previously, we thought that NEMESIS lives in the temple. We thought that Nemesis was the one who fixed Ben and infected French team. (also Nemesis confronted Ben in the form of Alex – but that could be a decoy, since Flocke was in the vicinity too) But now, JACOB is the one sending Sayid and Hurley into the temple so Sayid can be ‘fixed’. What is in the temple, then?! Is Jacob in the temple? Or is Nemesis ‘bound’ in some way to the temple, and must do Jacob’s bidding? Is something ELSE in the temple, something alive other than Nemesis and Jacob? (another side-pondering: Is it really Jacob that Hurley met, or is it a Nemesis manifestation?)

    8. My last thought of the day: episode 1 is titled “LAX”, which provides a safe assumption that we will see Losties land safely in LAX and then………. next episode is titled “What Kate Does”, as opposed to “What Kate Did” (LostS02E09). In S02E09, Kate sees a black horse (remember? ;D ), sees her ‘father’ Sam Austen, fights marshal Edward Mars, and kisses Jack (yay!)! Will next wk’s episode be a completely different ‘version’ of events from S02E09? We shall see!

8a. Also, Michael appeared in S02E09. Will he appear again next episode? Or, will his son Walt appear? After all, Walt has not been struck off our final season.

    Can’t wait can’t wait! :)

  2. I think that’s the longest comment I’ve ever gotten! Replies:

    1. Yes I noticed no body too. Yes interesting to think these two might be forever entwined in a “war” between them. And it makes one wonder what happened to them in the alternate timeline given that the Island and the statue are now submerged! Yes poor Bram! I thought he had quick thinking when he sprinkled the ash, but guess Man In Black is smarter.

    2. Yes I wasn’t expecting the Smokey mystery to be solved so early, but glad it was!

    3. Interesting take on Ben serving Man In Black. I keep thinking back to when he brought Locke to the Cabin. Who was in the cabin? Was the ash keeping Man In Black out? Or in? Or protecting Jacob? And how come Ben could “summon” Smokey (in that weird room with the water beneath his house) after the mercenaries killed Alex? And if he was deluded all this time, why wouldn’t Richard know?

    4. Okay Widmore makes my head spin. I really can’t figure out his angle at this point in time but it’s gonna be a great mystery!

    5. Speaking of Frogurt – nice cameo appearance! Back to Locke – Yes at this point in time I’m leaning to your thoughts too. Locke was always a pawn meant to die. But then why was Richard watching him throughout his life? Why did the Island cure him when he landed? Why did Jacob touch him after he fell out the window?

    6. I don’t think the alternate reality will stick. By the end of the series we’re going to have only one. Darlton have always said that they were fans of the Dark Tower series by Stephen King and personally I always thought the first scene in season six would be the final scene for the series. The Losties make it back but things have changed (like how the Dark Tower books end with Roland right at the beginning, chasing after the Man In Black, but this time with an extra artifact).

6a. When they are – I think they’re back in 2007. If Richard sees the fireworks from the temple, I think we can assume they’re in the same timeline. Interesting thoughts on moving the island AGAIN.

    7. I always thought that the people in the temple were servants of Jacob (from the time Ben ordered the Others to go there). If Man In Black really did save Young Ben, wouldn’t Jacob know? And if Jacob did know, why would he let Ben lead Richard? Good catch on the Hurley-Jacob conversation. I watched the episode again and have some thoughts. The first is the same as yours, that “Jacob” was Smokey. But when I watched the episode again I almost feel like Jacob looked at Sayid, knew he was beyond saving, and told Hurley to bring him back to the Temple so that he could be dumped in the Spring, but not survive so that Jacob could take his form. When he’s squatting over Sayid’s body at the Dharma van, it really does seem like he’s thinking about how Sayid’s situation can work for HIM (Jacob) rather than saving Sayid. Could be completely wrong on this though.

    8. Good catch with What Kate Does/Did!! I completely missed that! Yes WHAT is up with that horse?! I have never been a Kate fan so personally I’m not thrilled we have an episode seemingly focused on her so early in the season, but hopefully there will be enough of the rest of the cast (including previously dead people!!!!) to make me happy.

One thing I want revealed at the end is WHO is on WHOSE team. It’s always been some subset of the greater scheme (Losties vs Others, Locke vs Jack, Ben vs Locke, Ben vs Widmore) and now it seems the chessboard has finally been set for Jacob vs Man In Black – but who knows?!? WHO is Jacob referring to when he says “They’re coming” before he died? The creators were careful to leave this scene in when they showed “Previously on Lost” so there HAS to be a significance behind the “they”.

  3. Oh one more thing. I think they made a very intentional effort for Jack to say “Nothing is irreversible” to Locke at LAX when they landed. This seems to counter “Whatever Happened, Happened” and I really want to see which of these statements ultimately wins.

  4. YOU. NEED. HELP.

and not the trek-through-jungle-for-a-bloody-spring kind of help.

  5. Does the spring come complete with an oversized hourglass?

  6. Does the spring have a wooden ankh too? :P

Better yet, is the trek led by Locke? If this shit goes down I’m sticking with him.

    lol
