Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse – Birds, Bees, Blood & Beer

It’s not often I read a graphic novel that is wildly different from the vast majority out there. Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse is one of those graphic novels partially due to the fact that Ben Templesmith’s art is so distinctive, but also because the main character is a worm that inhabits a corpse. Yes, you read [...]

Stuff I Read In 2009

I did pretty well in 2009 with 28 books and 93 graphic novels.
Best book of the year was hands down Rant by Chuck Palahniuk, other worthy mentions include Death Star, the Horus Heresy, the Star Wars Legacy series and The Dip by Seth Godin.
On the graphic novel front, Avengers: The Initiative is a great book, [...]

Graphic Novel Haul (Part 1)

So Kinokuniya is having another 20% members-only sale, and that means money flies out of my wallet like there’s no tomorrow because I’ve stopped buying comics in single issue format, and buy the collected editions (graphic novels) instead. Here’s a quick overview of four of the nine graphic novels (GNs) I bought tonight:
Fallen Angel vol.4 [...]

Graphic Novel Review: Super-Villain Team-Up, MODOK’s 11

That’s MODOK. It stands for Mobile Organism Designed Only for Killing. He’s been somewhat of a joke in the past. I mean, c’mon, he’s a floating head on a chair! But in Super-Villain Team-Up, MODOK’s 11, he’s shown to be pretty smart as well, and deservedly shares the name of one of the smartest movies [...]

Graphic Novel Review: The Exterminators (By Simon Oliver & Tony Moore)

Graphic Novel Review: The Exterminators (By Simon Oliver & Tony Moore)

I finally got down to buying the final two volumes of The Exterminators by Simon Oliver and Tony Moore, and once I started, I couldn’t put them down until I was done.
The story starts simply. Henry James joins Bug Bee Gone, a pest extermination company, where he has all sorts of weird experiences with the [...]

Graphic Novel Review: Thor vol.1

Graphic Novel Review: Thor vol.1

I haven’t been a Thor fan in awhile. Although I will say I like him as a character (c’mon, what’s not to like about a Thunder God with a hugeass hammer yelling “HAVE AT THEE” and smashing everything in comic books!), I’ve just never been able to relate to him. He’s the big gun that [...]

Graphic Novel Review: Suburban Glamour

I’ve been hearing about Jamie McKelvie’s work for awhile now, namely Suburban Glamour and Phonogram. Having flipped through Phonogram previously, let me start this review off by saying all of Jamie McKelvie’s work should be in full colour, because it is freaking gorgeous.
So here’s the short story: Astrid (the girl on the cover) is actually [...]

Graphic Novel Review: Ex Machina

Graphic Novel Review: Ex Machina

A couple of weekends ago I sat down and read my backlog on Ex Machina graphic novels: Smoke, Smoke (vol.5), Power Down (vol.6) and Ex Cathedra (vol.7). Some background: Mitchell Hundred was caught in an explosion and got the “superpower” to speak to machines and went by the name The Great Machine. After he used [...]

Graphic Novel Review: Superman And The Legion Of Super Heroes By Geoff Johns And Gary Frank

After a slow start with Last Son and a stronger arc with Escape From Bizarro World, Geoff Johns and Gary Frank unite to metaphorically blow my mind with Superman and the Legion Of Super-Heroes. A cocktail of my love for team books, a fond affection for the Legion of Super-Heroes, Geoff John’s masterful understanding of [...]

Packing My Stuff From Amazon

Packing My Stuff From Amazon

Since coming to Kingston, Amazon has consistently impressed me, leading to increased purchases from them.
Whaddya think? Did I overdo it?
I think I may just miss Amazon most of all when I go home.
