Though everything changes around us; we will be the same as before – forever more

And with their comeback in 2007/2008, the world has moved on a decade but Take That will forever be awesome!

Next week: back to our regularly scheduled programming (though I suspect we won’t be completely free of the Take That bug…..)

In a shocking revelation, I realise that in over a year of talking about Music Mondays, I’ve never dedicated one to Take That – the group I consider to be the best boyband of all time. I think when I started Music Mondays I told myself I’d do something for Take That if I could hit a year (which I did 5 weeks ago) so I guess it’s about time.

For those who grew up a little later than I did, Take That was easily the biggest boy band of the 90’s, at least until 1996 when they disbanded (oh I will not forget finding that out on Valentine’s day when I was 12) and yes, they were bigger than the Backstreet Boys back in the day.

Almost impossibly, the band (less Robbie Williams) reunited in 2006, but personally I feel their new work hasn’t captured the magic of their stuff in the 90’s.

So it’s really hard to choose which songs to feature from the band because I love them all. So even though I do like some of their early work from the late ’80s, I’m going to pick 5 songs over the next 5 Music Monday installments from the “superstardom” years of 1993-1995 (as categorised by Wikipedia) which covers mainly two albums: Everything Changes and Nobody Else.

For today: Babe

I love this song for a variety of reasons. For one, it’s performed by Mark Owen and it was rare to have anyone other than Gary Barlow front a Take That song back then. I also really like the way the lyrics actually tell a story and the music is also actually quite haunting as it builds up to the revelation at the end.

When I was young (not all that long ago) the one CD that was in the car year in year out was the Carpenters Christmas album (a tradition that continues to this day) so I thought we’d end off the year with a final Christmas-themed Music Monday with a song from what I feel is one of the best musical acts of all times – The Carpenters:

Trivia:

The Christmas Song was first performed by Nat King Cole in 1946

It has since been covered by more than 150 other artists including Michael Buble, New Found Glory, Owl City and Weezer

I’m a huge fan of Lost (but you know that already), and I think what makes Lost stand out compared to every other show out there is the music.

Since season one, the very talented Michael Giacchino has scored music that not only brings the exact emotion required for each scene, but he’s also steadily composed ‘themes’ for each character like Jack, Sun and Jin, Ben, Hurley and everyone else. The music is played slightly differently each time, but always maintains the core of the theme.

My favourite track has got to be “Life and Death”. First debued at the death of Boone back in season one, it’s become a staple for the ’sad’ moments on Lost (including Charlie’s death in season three).

Watch the two deaths mentioned and see how well the music intertwines with the scene:
