So this week I’ve decided to do an artist that’s right up my alley and more “me” than any of the previous artists I’ve featured (with the exception of maybe Metro Station), also the story of how I discovered this band is a nice organic one, so why not.

So this week I’ve decided to do an artist that’s right up my alley and more “me” than any of the previous artists I’ve featured (with the exception of maybe Metro Station), also the story of how I discovered this band is a nice organic one, so why not.

So a month or so before leaving for Canada, I heard this pretty catchy song on the radio while driving, which had a very punk rock/pop punk sound to it. After hearing it a few more times I decided to hunt it down, and it was “Whoa Oh! (Me vs. Everyone)” by Forever The Sickest Kids:

After hunting around online, I managed to listen to their EP “Television Off, Party On” and pretty much liked what I heard, especially “She’s A Lady” and “Believe Me I’m Lying“. Interestingly enough, it was impossible to find their full album “Underdog Alma Mater” online.

Underdog Alma Mater

Fastforward about a month when I find the CD for something like $10 or $11 at a CD store, and I have to say, the album is pretty amazing. The album moves from “Whoa Oh” to other upbeat tracks, before ending with the slower tracks “Coffee Break” and “Catastrophe“. The thing that I really like about this band is the amount of energy that just flows from their music. Listen to the CD once through and it literally never dips in energy level. Even the quieter songs have a silent energy to them.

In a lot of ways Forever The Sickest Kids’s sound reminds me of when I first started listening to bands like New Found Glory, Simple Plan, Bowling For Soup and Sum 41. You know, the semi-loud punk sound, lotsa cymbals, nasal voice. And it works, given that the new material from those bands just don’t work for me anymore.

Amazingly, I can’t identify a song I don’t like off the album. There are some that aren’t as memorable as others, but that by no means suggests that they’re bad tracks. My favourite tracks? “The Way She Moves“, “Phone Call“, “That For Me”, “Believe Me I’m Lying” and “She’s A Lady“.

Have you heard of Forever The Sickest Kids? Did you like “Whoa Oh“? Be heard!
